Capacitance Sensor for Nondestructive Determination of Total Oil Content in Peanut Kernels
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this work, attempts were made to estimate the total oil content (TOC) in single peanut kernels, using the CI meter (Chari’s Impedance meter, described below). Mature peanut kernels of selected varieties with a range of oil contents from 47% to 61% were placed one at a time, between the parallel-plate electrodes of the CI meter, and the impedance (Z) and phase angle () of the system were measured, and capacitance, C was computed at 1, 5 and 9 MHz. After the measurements, the TOC of each kernel was determined by Soxhlet method. Using the known TOC values, and the corresponding C, Z and values, initially on a calibration group of kernels, calibration equations were developed. Using the model coefficients from the calibration, the TOCs of kernel samples of 31 diverse peanut genotypes grown in different environments in Australia were determined. The method predicted the TOC values of peanut kernels of 31 peanut genotypes, within 2% of the Soxhlet values, with an R of 0.87 (P < 0.001).

Phase angle and Impedance Measurements for Nondestructive Moisture Content Determination of In- Shell Peanuts Using a Cylindrical Sample Holder
Two parallel-plate electrodes were mounted inside a cylinder, made of a non-conducting material. The space between the plates was filled with peanut pods and the capacitance and phase angle of this system was measured with a prototype low-cost impedance meter, designed for this purpose. Measurements were made at frequencies of 1 and 5 MHz on peanut pod (in-shell) samples of known moisture conte...
متن کاملDetermination of Nutritional Value and Oxidative Stability of Fresh Walnut
Walnut (Juglans regia L.) is a tree with significant economic value and usage for human health and various food industries. However, fresh walnut kernels are a less widespread product than the dried kernels. This study aimed to determine the fresh walnut kernel properties including, fatty acid composition, proximate composition, total phenolics (TPs), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), acidic, p...
متن کاملNondestructive Microwave Measurement of Moisture Content and Mass of Single Peanut Kernels
Principles for determining moisture content and mass of individual peanut kernels by microwave resonator measurements are discussed, and data are presented showing the application of these principles. By measuring the shift in the resonant frequency and the change in the cavity transmission characteristics when a peanut is inserted into the cavity, it is possible to obtain the moisture content ...
متن کاملPreliminary Survey of Aflatoxins in Mashhad’s Roasted Red Skin Peanut Kernels during February to May 2016
Introduction: Aflatoxins (AFs) are a group of mycotoxins created as metabolic items for the most part by three types of Aspergillus including Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus parasiticus and the uncommon Aspergillus nomius. Eighteen aflatoxins have been identified up to now, but only six of them have been found in food and feed. Methods: The occurrence of aflatoxins in 32 samples of roasted red...
متن کاملSome nutritional characteristics of kernel and oil of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.).
Some nutritional properties of the peanut kernel and oils were established. The oil yields from these kernels vary from 32.7 % to 45.4 %. The content of protein ranged between 25.9 % to 32.4 %, with a mean value of 28.93 %. The mineral contents of peanut kernels were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). The contents of Na ranged from 867.7 mg/kg to 11...
